Norwegian metal project Tonic Breed has released a new single, “Close In,” featuring Charlie Engen of Five Finger Death Punch.
The track marks a collaboration between Tonic Breed founder Patrik K. Svendsen and Engen, blending melodic elements with a heavier, atmospheric sound.
“Close In” dates back more than two decades and was revisited multiple times before reaching its final form.
“This is definitely the track that’s taken the longest to finish. It’s been sitting with me for years, and it wasn’t until the right people got involved that it finally came together the way it was supposed to,” Svendsen said.
Co-producer Adrian Bjerketvedt helped shape the song’s final structure, while Engen’s drum performance added dynamic movement. Composer Ben Zimmermann contributed orchestration, with piano arrangements transforming early guitar-based ideas into more layered, emotional elements.
While still rooted in a heavy foundation, “Close In” represents a shift in direction for Tonic Breed.
“It still has weight and intensity, but it leans more into melody and atmosphere than what I’ve done before. Some will probably not expect it, but it still feels like a natural step for me,” Svendsen said.
The track incorporates clean passages, heavier sections and dynamic contrasts, along with harmonies, choirs and orchestration, marking a more expansive and atmospheric approach for the project.
Lyrically, the song explores themes of loss and emotional resilience. “It comes from a pretty heavy place. It’s about losing people close to you and carrying that weight with you,” Svendsen added.
While not an official release from Five Finger Death Punch, the involvement of Charlie Engen offers fans a chance to hear the drummer’s work in a different musical setting.
His contribution adds a familiar intensity while supporting the track’s more melodic and atmospheric direction.
