Chris Kael, bassist for Five Finger Death Punch (5FDP), has candidly shared his struggles with addiction, including a relapse during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a revealing interview on the Blood and Breakthrough Podcast, Kael discussed the emotional challenges that led to his relapse and his subsequent return to sobriety.
Kael had maintained sobriety for several years before the pandemic disrupted his routine. The isolation and emotional turmoil of the lockdown period contributed to his relapse. He acknowledged that being alone and dealing with personal issues made it difficult to stay on track. Despite the setback, Kael emphasized the importance of recognizing triggers and seeking help when needed.
After his relapse, Kael recommitted to his recovery journey. He engaged in virtual support meetings and worked closely with his sponsor to navigate the challenges of sobriety during unprecedented times. Kael highlighted the significance of accountability and the support system that helped him regain control over his life.
In the podcast, Chris describes how a breakup and the sudden halt of life on the road collided at a vulnerable time. “I wasn’t touring. I didn’t know when I was gonna be able to tour… I realised that I had an attachment to being in [Five Finger] Death Punch that I didn’t think… At that point, I didn’t think that I had an attachment. I was, like, ‘This is a good gig, but that’s not all I am.’ But then take away any chance of going out and living your purpose… I was completely lost.”
It was in this low point, he says, that growth began. “In my darkest times, that’s where I find my biggest strengths and my biggest growth.”
For fans and individuals facing similar challenges, Kael’s journey offers hope and insight into overcoming adversity and the power of resilience.
